Garnet National Winter Recreation Trails

Snowmobiles at Garnet ghost town
More than 116 miles of trails, including the 32-mile Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail, wind through the Garnet Mountain range. With none of the crowds found at Lolo Pass or Seeley Lake, these trails offer the chance for leisurely exploring and solitude. Snowmobilers and skiers share the trails, and you may see a dogsledder or two.

Activities: Snowmobiling, snow shoeing, cross-county skiing, interpretive trail.

Facilities: The visitor center at Garnet Ghost Town is open on weekends throughout the winter. Two cabins are available for rent; arrangements need to be made in advance.

Location/Access: From State Highway 200, about 30 miles east of Missoula, turn south between mile markers 22 and 23. From Interstate 90, take either the Drummond or Bearmouth exit and follow old U.S. 10 to the Bear Gulch Road. Follow signs up Bear Gulch to a point four miles from Garnet. Chains may be needed in winter on steep portions of the road.

Fees: $3 per person, free for those less than 16 years old.

Season/Hours: Visitor center open weekends, January 1–March 31, with limited hours. Check with local office (below) for snow conditions.
