Project Description:
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office has prepared this Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze potential impacts to the human and natural environment that may result from exploratory drilling for geothermal resources within the Magma Energy (U.S.) Corp. (Magma) McCoy II Unit Lease Area (NVN-88129X). The BLM manages the subsurface geothermal resources for this project and is also the surface management agency. Portions of leases NVN-85725, NVN-85726, and NVN-89605 are located in Lander County outside of the Stillwater Field Office. Only the portions of these leases within the Stillwater Field Office jurisdiction are being proposed for exploration. The activities proposed by Magma in this plan consist of geophysical exploration, temperature gradient hole drilling, production/injection well drilling and: • Initially conduct a suite of ground-based geophysical surveys, including acquisition of magnetotelluric and controlled source audio magnetotelluric data that will be analyzed and used in combination with other geoscientific data to define the best possible locations for subsequent drilling activities; • Construct one staging/storage area; • Drill as many as 20 temperature gradient wells and a combination of 15 slim holes or production/injection-type wells; • Log the holes for physical properties; and • Conduct flow tests of wells that have demonstrated potential to produce geothermal fluids. It may be necessary to construct drilling sites and access roads or to improve existing roads; it is the intent to utilize already disturbed acreage wherever possible. Disturbance related to the development of new roads and drill pads is anticipated to be less than 100 acres.
Project Location:
The project area is located on federal geothermal leases in the Edwards Creek Lease Area (NVN-85725, NVN-85726, NVN-85727, and NVN-86905), on public lands managed by the BLM Carson City District, Stillwater Field Office within the following legal land description: Sections 12, 13, 24, and 27-29, Township 22 North (T22N), Range 39 East (R39E); Sections 4-9 and 16-20, T22N, R40E; and Sections 7-9, 16-21, 28-32, and 34, T23N, R40E. The project area can be accessed by traveling east from Fallon, Nevada approximately 80 miles on Highway 50 then turning north on an unnamed gravel road, or west from Austin on Highway 50 approximately 30 miles. The project area is located approximately 11 miles north of Highway 50. Existing roads would serve as the main transportation corridors from Highway 50 to the proposed project area.
