BLM Ely District Signs Finding of No Significant Impact for Drought Management Environmental Assessment

Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for the Ely District Drought Management Environmental Assessment (EA). The 30-day public comment period for the EA closed March 21, 2013. Comments received during the public comment period were considered and incorporated into the Final EA, where appropriate.

No decision record is being issued at this time. However, if drought conditions worsen, a decision will be issued, as appropriate, to implement Drought Response Actions (DRAs) after consultation with, or a reasonable attempt to consult with, affected permittees or lessees, the interested public, and other organizations responsible for managing resources within the area.

DRAs allow for the rapid response to drought in order to alleviate the impacts of authorized uses and activities on natural resources that are at risk of being adversely affected by drought. The effects of drought are often far reaching, impacting the environment and economy of an area.

Some examples of potentially applicable DRAs include, but are not limited to, temporary changes in livestock season of use; reductions in livestock animal unit months or livestock grazing duration; targeted grazing; wild horse and burro removals; temporary water hauls, above ground pipelines and fencing, temporary closures to Off Highway Vehicles, restriction of seed collection of forest and vegetative resources, and mitigation measures for other authorized uses.
