What are the typical uses for vanadium?

Vanadium is an element that has historically been used to produce specialty steel alloys or used as a catalyst to produce sulfuric acid.  It is also a by-product of uranium mining. In this case, American Vanadium has teamed with an energy company to develop new energy storage technology using an electrolyte solution containing vanadium. The company will build a photovoltaic solar field at the mine to demonstrate the new battery technology on-site. 


Has there been previous mining activity on the site?


The claims associated with the Gibellini Mine were first located in 1942 by L.P. Gibellini of Eureka. The workings consisted of a shaft 37 feet deep, an adit 176 feet long, several shallow pits, and some trenches. Exploration activities on the Gibellini property have included mapping, trenching, and geochemical sampling from the 1940s to current time. Underground development was conducted at the Gibellini Manganese-Nickel Mine and the mine continued to be developed during the 1950s. American Vanadium US, Inc. acquired the claims in the proposed project area in March 2006 and has been conducting sampling and test work since that time.


What potential issues have already been identified for this project?


The BLM has identified the following preliminary issues: (1) closure of the sulfuric acid heap leach pad, (2) impacts to vegetation and wildlife that could include loss of habitat for Greater sage-grouse and loss of acreage for livestock grazing, and (3) cumulative socioeconomic concerns associated with the influx of workers expected to be employed by this mine and others in the nearby area over the next several years.
