White River Field Office Gather Begins September 16
The White River Field Office 2015 wild horse gather was completed on Sept. 24, 2015. The Field Office gathered 167 horses from the West Douglas Herd Area.
The BLM humanely gathered 167 excess wild horses in the White River Field Office. The BLM is committed to maintaining healthy wild horse herds in the most appropriate locations in the White River Field Office to ensure the long-term health of the wild horses and public lands.
The White River Field Office manages the 190,000-acre Piceance East Douglas HMA for a healthy wild horse herd that's in balance with other uses of the land. The West Douglas Herd Area has not been designated for wild horse management. The BLM estimates there are approximately 530 excess horses within the White River Field Office planning area.
The BLM is limited to gathering 167 wild horses based on available space in short-term holding. The field office may gather wild horses from Piceance-East Douglas Herd Management Area if it is not able to gather 167 horses from West Douglas Herd Management Area.
