The Royal Gorge Field Office is home to several popular rock climbing areas including the internationally recognized Shelf Road climbing area. 


Shelf Road– Just 30 minutes north of Canon City off the Red Canyon Road, this internationally known sport climbing area is home to hundreds of routes on quality limestone with nearby camping. Spring and fall are the best times of year to visit the area and is also the busiest.  Please consider leaving your dog at home when visiting Shelf Road climbing area during busy times to reduce conflicts.

Buena Vista Area– The rock climbing on BLM lands near Buena Vista is in the low, semi-arid mountains on the East side of the Arkansas River Valley.   Popular spots include Turtle Rock and Pump House Rock both just West of Buena Vista with lots of nearby dispersed camping options.

General Information

The lands managed by the Royal Gorge Field Office are home other opportunities for rock climbing. Refer to local shops and guidebooks for additional information and other areas. To be a steward of the land and minimize the impacts of your sport, please observe the following guidelines:

  • Stay on the access trails and do not shortcut switchbacks.
  • If you must bring your dog, keep it on a leash and under control at all times. Pick up after your pet and pack out its waste.
  • Camp only in designated sites in designated areas.
  • If you are camping in areas without designated sites, follow the dispersed camping guidelines.
  • Pack out all trash, even if it’s not yours.
  • Know the property boundaries and do not climb on private property without permission.
