Gunnison Bluffs - Orchard Mesa Trailhead

Site Overview: This trailhead provides access to the Gunnison Bluffs trail and portions of the Old Spanish Trail on the bluffs above the Gunnison River between Grand Junction and Whitewater.  These trails provide visitors an opportunity to observe scenic views and reflect on classic western history.  From the trail visitors can observe the uplifted canyon country of the Uncompahgre Plateau, the lush riparian habitat along the Gunnison River, and the dry desert route of the historic Old Spanish Trail.  Spring and fall are the best times to experience the trails (March - May or late August - October)Several sections of these trails cross private property and Mesa County property. Please stay on designated routes. LENGTH OF TRAIL:   Approximately 6 miles between the Orchard Mesa Trailhead and the Whitewater Trailhead. TECHNICAL LEVEL:   Moderate

Directions:   The trailhead is located in a residential area just south of the intersection of Hwy 50 and 28-1/2 Road on Orchard Mesa south of Grand Junction. Turn south off of Hwy 50 at 28 ½ Road then take a quick left on B Road. Travel past Lion's Park (a very small roadside park) then turn right on 28 ½ Road. The parking lot will be immediately on your right at the edge of a large field. From the trailhead signs will direct you southwest across the field then through a residential area to the trail. Several sections of these trails cross private property and Mesa County property. Please stay on designated routes.
