Site Overview: The area surrounding the town of Gateway offers exceptional recreation opportunities, stunning views and unique geological features, most notably the Palisade. Opportunities exist for a variety of recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, motorcycling, all-terrain vehicle use and jeeping. Other opportunities include horseback riding, nature study, hunting, and viewing scenery and natural features. The Gateway trail system, located outside of Gateway Canyons Resort offers miles of hiking and mountain biking opportunities, while the John Brown Road leads OHV enthusiasts through a remarkable canyon and atop a beautiful mesa with spectacular views, and is also a popular alternate route to Moab. Those seeking more primitive recreation can explore the area’s two Wilderness Study Areas: The Palisade WSA and Sewemup WSA.

Directions: From Highway 50 at Whitewater south of Grand Junction, turn west onto Highway 141. Travel south and west on Hwy 141 for approximately 43 miles to the town of Gateway. To access the mountain biking/hiking trail system, turn right (west) into the resort. Proceed west around the south side of the Gateway Auto Museum then turn into the large parking lot on your right. Restrooms are in the building on the north side of the parking lot. To access John Brown Canyon, take a right on John Brown Road after passing the resort.
