The Horse Mountain Trail area offers outstanding jeep and OHV opportunities on several miles of dirt roads. Primitive camping and picnicking are also allowed. The area's elevation ranges from 6,000 to 8,500 feet and is covered with pinon-juniper woodland, sagebrush and oak brush, with a few aspen stands in the upper elevations. It showcases panoramic views of the Grand hogback, Middle Rifle Creek and surrounding mountains. Fishing is available.
Go north on Highway 13 about 3 miles and turn right on Highway 325 to Rifle Gap Reservoir. Turn left along the reservoir and travel about 4 miles up West Rifle Creek to the dirt road on the right, which climbs up Horse Mountain. The road looks back down the mountain farther west, and several spur roads and trails take you to outstanding overlooks.
