Wilderness areas in Colorado are managed to protect natural landscapes, ecosystems and habitats on BLM public lands for the purpose of preserving healthy environments and clean water. At the same time, the beauty and solitude of these areas can be respectfully enjoyed by visitors. There are five BLM wilderness areas in Colorado, and each offers exceptional opportunities for various recreational activities.

Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area:
Dominguez Canyon Wilderness

Within Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area, the canyons and wildlife of Dominguez Canyon Wilderness offer scenic hiking and horseback riding, especially along Big Dominguez Creek and Little Dominguez Creek. There are also historical traces of Native American tribes and miners.

Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area:
Gunnison Gorge Wilderness

Gunnison Gorge Wilderness encompasses a unique double canyon cut by the Gunnison River. This secluded portion of Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area is fantastic for hiking, camping and wildlife viewing, and river rapids ranging from class II to IV provide for boating.

McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area:
Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness

The fascinating geological features of Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness include natural arches, spires and windows. This scenic area within McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area is a wonderful place for wildlife viewing, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, hunting and more.

Powderhorn Wilderness

Powderhorn Wilderness is a beautiful and peaceful place. High alpine lakes, notably Powderhorn Lakes and Devil's Lake, lead into drainages flowing down through stunning valleys. Here, visitors can enjoy hiking, hoseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and more.

Uncompahgre Wilderness

Within the San Juan Mountains lies the stunning Uncompahgre Wilderness, which features two fourteeners and dozens of peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation. Expanses of alpline tundra and thick, green forests are complemented by alpine lakes and streams; visitors can enjoy more than 100 miles of trails.
