Some of Colorado's best fishing is found on BLM-managed public lands. Fishers will find a wide variety of bass, trout, pike and catfish species, among others. From remote subalpine lakes to fly fishing opportunities, Colorado encompasses the full breadth of outdoor fishing.

Whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

With fishing access sites all along the river, Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area features some of Colorado's most outstanding fishing. Visitors will find that brown trout are quite prevalent here.

Deep Creek Recreation Area

Visitors scrambling through the primitive trail at Deep Creek Recreation Area can take advantage of great fishing along the way. Brook, brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout are all available for catching.

Dolores River

Dolores River Recreation Area

Challenging year-round catch-and-release fishing within the Dolores River Recreation Area is available along the Main Dolores River and the West Dolores River. Brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout are all common here.

Eagle River Recreation Area

Fly fishing is very popular at Eagle River Recreation Area. The River is primarily habitat for brown and rainbow trout, but fishers may occasionally come across brook and cutthroat trout as well.

Gunnison Gorge Wilderness

Within Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness provides opportunities for a variety of outstanding recreational activities. The Gunnison River is well known for its world-class Gold Medal trout waters.

Yampa River

Little Yampa Canyon Recreation Area

The Yampa River is home to various bass, pike and trout species. In particular, fishers visiting Little Yampa Canyon Recreation Area will find small mouth bass and northern pike. In addition, catfishing is possible at Juniper Canyon and Cross Mountain Canyon.

San Miguel River Recreation Area

As the largest tributary to the Dolores River, the San Miguel River provides excellent habitat for brown and rainbow trout. Several river access points offer fishing opportunities within the San Miguel River Recreation Area.

Upper Colorado River

The Upper Colorado River offers fishing access sites throughout its length. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of options, but the best opportunities are found in areas known for Gold Medal fishing.
