Fighting car fire during training exercise

Bureau of Land Management firefighters received training last week on use of self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

These breathing units have traditionally been more commonplace for urban firefighters. BLM's wildland firefighters are now learning to use the equipment to provide for an added level of safety. Fire crews at remote stations are often the first to respond to incidents such as auto accidents, where they work to keep fires from spreading onto adjacent wildlands. The SCBA units provide protection from the noxious smoke produced in such blazes.

Last week's training involved crews from Susanville, Alturas, the King Range and Cedarville. It was conducted by Absolute Safety Training of Willows, California.
