Abstract:
Ozone nonattainment areas in Arizona. |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.
Ozone nonattainment areas in Arizona.

This dataset and other datasets in the BLM Phoenix District Office Geographic Information Database represent data for the BLM Phoenix District Office, and may include the Hassayampa Field Office and Lower Sonoran Field Office. Ozone - At ground-level, ozone is the primary constituent of smog. Ozone is not emitted directly into the air but is formed by the reaction of VOCs and NOx in the presence of heat and sunlight. Ground-level ozone forms readily in the atmosphere, usually during hot summer weather. VOCs are emitted from a variety of sources, including motor vehicles, chemical plants, refineries, factories, consumer and commercial products, and other industrial sources. Nitrogen oxides are emitted from motor vehicles, power plants, and other sources of combustion. Changing weather patterns contribute to yearly differences in ozone concentrations from city to city. Ozone and the precursor pollutants that cause ozone also can be transported into an area from pollution sources found hundreds of miles upwind. Stratospheric ozone shields the Earth against harmful rays from the sun, particularly ultraviolet B. (Source: Maricopa County Air Quality Dept. 2010) VOCs - Volatile Organic Compounds. Organic chemicals all contain the element carbon (C); organic chemicals are the basic chemicals found in living things and in products derived from living things, such as coal, petroleum and refined petroleum products. Many of the organic chemicals we use do not occur in Nature, but were synthesized by chemists in laboratories. Volatile chemicals produce vapors readily; at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, vapors escape easily from volatile liquid chemicals. VOCs include gasoline, industrial chemicals such as benzene, solvents such as toluene and xylene, and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene, the principal dry cleaning solvent). Many volatile organic chemicals are also hazardous air pollutants; for example, benzene causes cancer.(Source: Maricopa County Air Quality Dept. 2010)
This data should not be used at a scale larger than 1:24,000. The data and corresponding attributes are only as accurate as the source maps from which they were obtained, and may vary depending on the data and method of acquisition. This data is suitable for regional planning, management decision support at intermediate scales (i.e. 1:24,000 or smaller), and cartographic purposes. The data is not suitable for analysis at scales larger than 1:24,000. If the Receiving Agency (RA) has modified the data in any way, they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on hardcopy maps utilizing the data. RA specifically agrees not to misrepresent datasets or to imply that any changes made were approved by BLM. No warranty is made by the BLM for use of the data for purposes not intended by BLM.
