2013 Prescribed Fires Schedule

Fairbanks, Alaska — The Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service will assist the U.S. Army Garrison-Alaska with the coordination and implementation of multiple prescribed fires in the Donnelly Training Area, Yukon Training Area, Fort Wainwright Main Post Area, Railhead Communication line of site, and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson from April 1 to June 1. A schedule of planned prescribed fires is attached.

The prescribed fires follow federally approved burn plans and open burn approvals from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Trained personnel will monitor the burn areas during the prescribed fire period and for several days after the burns are complete.

The purpose of the prescribed fires is to reduce the potential for wildfire, dispose of hand-piled woody debris created during thinning operations from prior years, and eliminate dried grass build up. Removing the piles and grass now will reduce fire danger during the summer months. The prescribed fires help to increase training opportunities in support of military readiness.

Fire will only be ignited when suitable weather conditions exist and air quality will not be affected. Smoke from the prescribed fires may be visible from locations near the burn areas but is not expected to linger. Diligent coordination with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the Alaska National Weather Service has been conducted and will be ongoing during the prescribed fire period.

For more information about the prescribed fires, contact the Alaska Fire Service Public Affairs Office at 907-356-5511, or the Alaska Fire Service dispatch at 356-5554.
