State Herd Area: Big Summit (OR)

The Big Summit HMA is actually a herd area inside the Ochoco National Forest adminstered by the BLM. The nearest town is Prineville, OR. Approximately 85 animals live in this HMA, in a habitat predominantly Ponderosa pine forest with scattered meadows and a few open hillsides. The animals range from 14 - 14.3 hands, with brown and bay as the most common colors. They share the range with elk and mule deer.
