Description:
Abstract:
This theme is polygon data that depicts five types of
sagebrush habitats (sage-grouse habitats) for the state of
Wyoming. These five attributes are sagebrush/ perennial
grassland, perennial grasslands without sagebrush, annual
grasslands with or without sagebrush, conifer/juniper
encroachment areas, and non-sagebrush habitats. This
mid-scale (1:100,000) evaluation process was designed to
complement national (large-scale) sagebrush (sage-grouse)
planning efforts and provided a step- down analysis to
state level efforts. Information sources and assessment
processes varied depending on data available and resource
specialist participation for areas within the state. These
reviews were intended to provide an understanding of how
management activities within portions of the state fit in
with broad- scale ecosystem and public land management.
Purpose:
Wyoming BLM had an immediate need for a single, overall
spatial portayal of general sagebrush and sage-grouse
habitat conditions for land use planning and habitat
conservation planning. This effort is part of a larger
national BLM effort concerning sagebrush and sage-grouse.
Supplemental_Information:

DATA_QUALITY_INFORMATION

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The basis for most of the vegetation mapping came from the
Wyoming GAP Analysis Land Cover Map. No formal statewide
validation of the Wyoming GAP land cover map has been done.
Field resource specialists from BLM, WGFD, FS, NRCS, BIA,
and FWS assisted and reviewed the digital and hard copy
maps. Edits were made to the maps based on field knowledge
of ground conditions as they existed at that date. No other
validation was conducted.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data has been checked for topological consistency. There
are no dangling arcs, unlabled polygons, or other
topological errors.
Completeness_Report:
Data was collected statewide regardless of ownership. All
sagebrush attributes from the 1996 Wyoming GAP data were
combined into a single sagebrush attribute. Other polygons
were attributed as sagebrush if they contained a sagebrush
canopy cover of 5 percent or greater. Portions of GAP
polygons that were attributed as sagebrush were classed as
other habitat types if they had less than 5 percent
sagebrush canopy cover. However, existing sagebrush cover
that did not have adequate understory herbaceous conditions
to meet the needs of sage-grouse were classified as annual
grasslands with or without sagebrush. Undesirable plant
species such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), Japanese
brome
(Bromus japonicus), or other exotic plants are common to
dominant in this habitat type. This habitat may or may not
have greater than 5 percent sagebrush canopy cover.
Expensive
management treatments may be needed for improvement.
Perennial grasslands habitats without sagebrush were
identified as sagebrush-limited areas with acceptable
understory conditions in terms of perennial grass species
composition, including native and seeded perennial grass
rangelands. These habitats have the ability to have
sagebrush
reestablish within these habitats. Habitats identified as
conifer encroachment have conifers encroaching into
sagebrush
habitats. This habitat should not be confused with
conifer/juniper types where conifer species are normally
located. Encroachment of conifers into these areas is
usually the result of changes in past fire or other land
management decisions.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Baseline data was collected from various sources and
reprojected, if necessary, via ArcInfo 7.1. Data for the
state was clipped by 1:100,000 USGS quad maps. Fifty-two
maps comprise the State of Wyoming. Maps were clipped to
reduce file size and facilitate file management. A
two person team (biologist and GIS specialist) visited with
local, federal, and state resource specialists at various
locations throughout the state to delineate vegetation
polygons. Electronic data at 1:100,000 was projected via a
LCD projector using ArcView 3.2. Data themes were
alternatively turned on and off to orient resource
specialists and determining current vegetation communities
within each polygon. Resource specialist reached concensus
concerning the attributes and polygon shapes. In areas
where there was no specific knowledge of a polygon the
polygon was usually defaulted to the original GAP polygon
or adjacent edited polygon. Polygon size was normally no
smaller than 40 acres due to the scale and lack of acurate
detailed data.
Following visits to field offices, the two person mapping
team edited maps to edge match polygons across map borders
and check for topological and attribute consistency. Draft
maps were then printed on mylar and sent to field offices
for editing. Following receipt of edited maps from field
offices, final edits were made to each map. The resulting
ArcView shape files were imported into ArcInfo 7.2 as
coverages, projected, and merged into one statewide coverage.

ENTITY_AND_ATTRIBUTE_INFORMATION

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This data set is in the format of one ArcInfo7.2 coverage
of polygon features of vegetation categories. The fields
Shape, Area, Perimeter, Wy_sb5_, and Wy_sb5_id are software
generated. The Vegcat field has five attributes: Sagebrush,
Per. grass w/ sagebrush loss, Annual grasses, Conifer
encroachment, and Non-Sagebrush. The
definitions for the Vegcat attributes are:
Sagebrush - This habitat consisted of a habitat with at
least 5 percent sagebrush canopy cover and a perennial
native or seeded grass understory.
Per. grass w/ sagebrush loss - This habitat was identified
as sagebrush limited areas where the sagebrush canopy was
less than 5 percent. Acceptable perennial understory
conditions in terms of perennial grass species composition,
including native and seeded perennial grass rangelands.
These habitats have the ability to have sagebrush
re-establish within these habitats.
Annual grasses - This habitat may or may not have existing
sagebrush cover, but the understory herbaceous conditions are
generally poor. Undesirable plant species such as cheatgrass
(Bronus tectorum), Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus), or
other exotic plants are common to dominant.
Conifer encroachment - These are habitas where conifers are
encroaching into sagebrush habitats. This habitat should not
be confused with conifer/juniper types where conifer species
are normally located. Encroachment of conifers into these
areas is usually the result of changes in past fire or other
land management decisions.
Non-sagebrush - These habitats are made up of all other
vegetation communities than those describe above that have
less that 5 percent sagebrush canopy cover.
