Abstract:
This dataset depicts range improvement projects (RIP's), including management facilities, reservoirs, vegetation manipulations, and water developements, on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land in the Pinedale Field Office (PFO). The type of project, location and date constructed or implemented are included when known.
The original dataset locations are not exact and were located by 1/4, 1/4 section. The rangeland management specialists are collecting new locations using GPS technology and the location of RIP's are updated as they are collected.
This dataset does not address condition of RIP's. The RIP's were constructed with the objective of improving rangelands through the proper distribution of livestock.
Purpose: This dataset keeps an accurate spatial inventory of RIP's on the ground. Range personnel can use this data to determine need for new RIP's. Also, this data is used to determine whether a proposed action is going to conflict with the objective of an existing RIP. RIP's were collected to aid natural resource managers in making decisions affecting public lands.
Supplemental_Information: This data was retrieved from the GABS database which at the time of development was not compatible with ArcView GIS. Condition of RIP's are unknown to date. Some projects may be non-functional, administratively abandoned or viable but in need of reconstruction. Please use data with caution.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Attributes are believed to be accurate. If there are errors, as people review actions in the field office, errors should be found and reported. There are blanks (or unknowns) in the attribute table. The data was either not found in the RIP file or unknown. Eventually, the data gaps should be lessened. Status of the projects (e.g. where functioning or defunct) is not known or determined on all inventoried projects. No formal tests have been run.
Logical_Consistency_Report: These data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed.
Completeness_Report: Data is as complete as can be found in the RIP files. If there are omissions in the table, the data could not be located or wasn't present with the record.

BLM Pinedale Field Office provided a database hardcopy printout of township, range, section and quarter quarter location of their range improvements including water developments, fences, vegetation plots, etc. Since their database format was incompatible with SDVC systems, point locations based on quarter quarters were visually estimated using the 7.5 minute digital topographic maps as a base. In some cases, the location of the well/reservoir was apparent on the map and the location could be pinpointed more precisely than just by legal description. There are errors in the placement of the range improvements. Specialists are updating their placement as they come across erroneous data. The Pinedale Field Office is considering updating this dataset by a different method since it is possible to retrived GABS in GIS friendly format.
Rangeland management specialists updated range improvement project locations utilizing GPS technology during the 2005 summer field season. The previous known locations were replaced by the new location information in early 2006.
