- Description:
- Abstract:
- This is a vector line coverage file showing the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail in the Lander and Rawlins Field Offices. The coordinates for this dataset were collected using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Volunteers, using a Trimble ProXL receiver, mapped the trail in the summer of 2001 by walking and driving the trail segments. As this is a "new" trail, some segments did not exist as a feature on the ground, so the volunteers marked the trail with carsonite signs and mapped these segments also.
- Purpose:
- To show the location of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail in the Lander and Rawlins Field Offices. The intended use of all data in the BLM's GIS library is to support diverse activities including planning, management, maintenance, research, and interpretation. This dataset was produced with an intended application at the 1:24,000 scale.
- Supplemental_Information:
- The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail was designated by Congress in 1978. The BLM designated an on-the-ground route in the Rawlins and Lander Field Offices in 1999/2000. The Lander and Rawlins Field Offices are located in central and south Wyoming. They include all of Fremont, Carbon, Albany, and Laramie counties, the southwest corner of Natrona County, and portions of Sweetwater and Hot Springs counties.

- Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
- Data collection was streamlined through use of a data dictionary (CD Trail.ddf) of attribute menus installed on the GPS data logger. This procedure enhanced attribute accuracy by reducing attribute-related decision making in the field and minimizing keying errors. Some attributes were generated by the Pathfinder Office software. The outdoor recreation planner verified the attributes for those features that he had personally been to on the ground. The GIS specialist checked all attributes for consistency.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
- Topologically clean dataset. There are no duplicate features present. Arcs were exported from Pathfinder Office into ArcInfo. Arcs were snapped to each other and overshoots were deleted in the ArcEdit module of ArcInfo. The ArcInfo commands INTERSECTERR and NODERRORS were used to identify missing or deviant data. Topology was built using the ArcInfo BUILD command with the "arc" option.
- Completeness_Report:
- The entire length of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail located in Lander and Rawlins Field Offices was mapped.
- Positional_Accuracy:
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
- The data were collected according to an accuracy standard of maintaining a maximum PDOP (Position Dilution of Precision) of 6, while tracking a minimum of 4 SV (space vehicles). These data were differentially corrected and have estimated accuracies in the X and Y direction of 0 to 5 meters. The horizontal positional accuracy was tested by verifying the location of the data on-screen relative to the corresponding 1:24000 USGS DRG (digital raster graphic) or DOQ (Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles) in the same projection and datum.

This format consisted of three files for each day's field work, named cdnst_ro.aa, cdnst_ro.aml, and cdnst_ro.gen. Files were exported in geographic coordinates of decimal degrees in NAD83. The export process added three attributes generated by the GPS software (Pathfinder Office).

- This coverage represents many different coverages that were generated in the various steps in the creation of the final product. This coverage was considered a temporary "work in progress" and no longer exists. It was the means by which lines from multiple sources were consolidated, edited and attributed to make the final cdt coverage.
- Process_Step:
- Process_Description:
- During July and August, 2001, two volunteers, Karen and Bill Gahr, walked and drove the Continental Divide Trail segment across Lander Field Office. They used a Trimble ProXL to map the route. In many places the Continental Divide Trail is coincident with such things as county roads, two-tracks, or trails. In other places the Continental Divide Trail went cross-country and had no real on-the-ground features to correspond to. The Gahrs followed the marked route and mapped it with the GPS unit. In addition, they documented the locations of carsonite sign posts that mark the route. A maximum Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) of 6 was maintained for each set while tracking at least 4 satellites. At the end of a field day the Gahrs returned to the BLM Lander Field Office, where they downloaded the GPS data onto Windows NT computers running Pathfinder Office v.2.51. Differential correction was performed using Trimble Community Base Station data from the University of Wyoming site. The corrected GPS files were edited for known deviant and duplicate data. Data was then exported into an ArcInfo 7.2 format using geographic coordinates in NAD83. During the export Pathfinder Office was asked to include three attributes: rcvr_type, gps_date, and datafile (see attribute section for details) which the software can generate.

- Process_Description:
- The GPS data was converted to a coverage by running the AML (ArcInfo Macro Language) that Pathfinder Office created in the export process. All of the line segments were copied into a base tic coverage. The dataset was then reviewed with ArcInfo's ArcEdit module, deleting overshoot arcs and snapping arcs to each other. Arcs were compared to DRG maps to ensure that the GPS data lined up correctly with know features. After the line editing was done, the ArcInfo command Build was run to build topology. In addition to the attributes that had been in the original GPS data dictionary for the trail feature and the three attributes generated by Pathfinder Office during export, two additional attributes were added: cdt_segmen and mile. Connie Breckenridge, GIS Coordinator, completed this process.

- Attribute information was edited and added to the coverage using ArcView 3.2. An ArcView sample Avenue script called calcapl.ave was run to change the ArcInfo generated length field from decimal degrees to meters because the view had been projected in UTM zone 12. Based on the length field, values for the mile field were then calculated to give the length of each segment in miles. Connie Breckenridge, GIS Coordinator, completed this process.

- In response to Instruction Memorandum No. 2003-021, five additional attributes were added to bring this to the Bureau of Land Management's data standards for National Landscape Conservation System GIS Boundary Data and related spatial elements. The ADDITEM command in ArcInfo was used to define the attribute items. These items were: nst_def_feature, nst_coord_source, nst_name, nst_state, and nst_office. The fields were then populated with the appropriate attribute data. Metadata was written. Connie Breckenridge, GIS Coordinator, completed this process.

- Overview_Description:
- Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
- The following fields in the arc attribute table were created and maintained by the ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) ArcInfo software: FID, Shape, FNODE#, TNODE#, LPOLY#, RPOLY#, Length, CDT#, and CDT-ID. However, Length was recalculated from its native units of decimal degrees to meters. Miles were calculated from the Length field. Nst_def_feature, nst_coord_source, nst_name, nst_state, and nst_office were fields required by Instruction Memorandum No. 2003-021, October 15, 2002, Final National Landscape Conservation System GIS Boundary Data Standards and Database Submission Requirements. Type, Surface_Ty, and Comments were user-defined attributes from the GPS data dictionary CD Trail.ddf. Rcvr_Type, GPS_Date, and Datafile are fields generated by the GPS software, Trimble Pathfinder Office, at export to GIS. Name and CDT_Segmen were two additional fields added by the recreation specialist to help group similar segments.
