There are 13 active coal mines in the Wyoming portion of the Powder River Basin, and these mines produced about 496 million short tons as of September 2009.   The State of Wyoming received almost $26 million in PILT (payment in lieu of taxes) payments from the sale of coal produced in Wyoming.  Coal mines in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming employed over 6,800 personnel in 2008.
