Project:
Wyoming Abandoned Mine Land Project 17B-III  (aka South Mountain Phosphate Mine)

Location: Lincoln County

Site Features: 1800 feet long surface cut with a 30-70 foot high highwall, collapsed portal & loadout facility on slope below surface mine; open shaft (40 ft. deep), exploratory trenches & 2 acre surface cut approximately 1.5 miles north of primary activity

Safety Hazards: open shafts, highwalls

Environmental Hazards: erosion, sedimentation & pollutant migration

Reclamation: completed 2003; wooden loadout structure buried in the surface cut, which was then backfilled with spoil material, eliminating the highwall; vertical shaft & subsidence holes backfilled & recontoured on the 2 acre disturbed area to the north; approximately 1300 feet of new access road constructed & then reclaimed at the end of the project; geotextile fabric & gravel placed over the Sublette Cutoff of the Oregon Trail to protect the National Historic Trail was removed at the end of the project; all disturbed areas were topsoiled & seeded with a native grass & shrub mixture & protected with biodegradable erosion control matting as needed

Date of Reclamation: 2003

Cost: BLM contributed in-kind services

Monitoring: DEQ/AML will monitor revegetation success on a yearly basis for 3 years. Any remaining reclamation concerns will be addressed at that time.
