Planned Start Date:
March - June 2011

Planned Project Duration: 1 - 5 days

Project Summary:
The Brown’s Spring Prescribed Burn is proposed for the area known locally as Brown’s Spring. It is located approximately 35 miles south of Rock Springs, Wyoming on U. S. Highway 191. The project area lies just west of the highway which is the eastern boundary of the treatment area. The Maxon Ranch is just over one mile to the north of the project area.

Vegetation proposed for treatment is composed of mountain big sagebrush, serviceberry, snowberry, golden currant, a healthy aspen clone and various native perennial grasses. The sagebrush is hindering the production of the more desirable mountain shrub species and increases the probability of a high severity wildfire. This competition is exacerbated by the amount of decadence and moderate live/dead ratio in the serviceberry plants.

Prescribed fire in the spring, under marginal conditions, allows for a reduction in hazardous fuels, improved production of mountain shrubs, re-alignment of vegetation with natural successional processes, increased defensible space, greater protection for the ranch and increased safety for fire fighters.
