Fire Education Day at Casper Recreation CenterBy Jay Esperance, Fire Management Office & Lesley Collins, Public Affairs Specialist, High Plains District Office Smokey Bear spent the morning with 175 kids from the Casper Recreation Center on June 25. “It was great to get out in the community and spend time with the kids going over fire safety,” noted Fire Management Office Jay Esperance. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) High Plains Fire District sponsored a Fire Education Day at the Casper Recreation Center Adventure Camp. BLM set up three stations for the kids aged 5 to 11. The first station included Smokey Bear himself teaching kids about fire safety with Smokey helpers Robin Nelson and Abby Uhrich. Kids then moved onto the next station where they toured a BLM fire truck with Captain Derek Bitner and Assistant Captain Eric Brandon and got to try out the fire hose. The final station included Jay Esperance, and Center Manager Cheryl Carpenter who taught kids how to safely put out a campfire. Students themselves acted as the fire, the fire ring, trees, and a rake and everyone got to dump water on each other in the end to put out the fire. |
