BLM Hosts Public Meetings for Proposed Uranium Project
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lander Field Office will host public meetings in Lander and Riverton to discuss a proposed uranium project in Fremont County.
Strathmore Resources (US), LTD proposes to conduct conventional uranium exploration and development in the Gas Hills Unit, approximately 45 miles east of Riverton and 35 miles southwest of Casper. The project area is approximately 12,400 acres, of which 11,040 acres are federal surface. This area has been a uranium district since the early 1950s.
Strathmore proposes to mine the uranium using conventional or open pit methods and with on-site heap leach processing of uranium into yellow cake. Surface disturbance from pits, spoils storage, material storage, roads and processing facilities including the heap leach will total approximately 2,000 acres and will be phased over twelve years. Upon termination of mining operations and final surface reclamation, it is likely that the heap leach area will be restricted from public access and transferred to the Department of Energy for long-term custodial care.
The open houses will provide the public an opportunity to review the proposal and project information. BLM resource specialists and the project proponent will be available to provide information and answer questions. Comment forms will be available.
The BLM will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) to analyze Strathmore’s proposed project. Project information and documents will be available on the website at: www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/documents/lfo/LowerGasHillsConvMine.html.
Public input is valuable early in the process and will enable the BLM to develop a well-informed EIS. Comments should be received by September 9, 2013. Written comments may be emailed to: BLM_WY_Lower_Gas_Hills_Conventional_Mine@blm.gov, or mailed to: Bureau of Land Management, Lander Field Office, Attn: Kristin Yannone, Project Manager, 1335 Main Street, Lander, WY 82520.
