BLM Hosts Bird Watching Sessions at Welch Ranch May 14 and 18

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Buffalo Field Office is celebrating International Migratory Bird Day with two guided bird watching hikes.  Hikes will be offered on Tuesday, May 14 and Saturday, May 18 at the Welch Ranch.

The event will take place at Welch Ranch Management Area, located approximately 10 miles north of Sheridan at the intersection of Highway 338 and the Tongue River.  BLM Wildlife Biologist Don Brewer will begin the bird-watching sessions at 7 a.m. from the parking lot south of the river.  Welch Ranch provides 1,750 acres of wetland, forest, and grassland habitat for migrating, nesting, and wintering birds.  On past hikes participants have spotted more than 30 species of birds while observing the spring migration.

Attendees are asked to wear appropriate footwear and bring their own binoculars (if possible), sunscreen, snacks and water.

International Migratory Bird Day is an annual conservation and education event to celebrate and support migratory bird conservation.  This migratory bird event increases public awareness and involvement in bird conservation.  Birds are economically important and a priceless part of America’s natural heritage—and they are critical indicators of environmental health upon which we all depend.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
