Wilderness Investigations Workshop Offered
The Bureau of Land Management Pinedale Field Office, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center, is offering a free Wilderness Investigations teacher workshop on Oct. 5 and 6 in Boulder, Wyo.
Teachers will be introduced to Wilderness Investigation topics, including:
- Preservation and protection in their natural condition
- For the American people of present and future generations
- Outstanding opportunities
- Preservation of their wilderness character
- A maturing democracy
Other segments will cover key components of Wilderness Investigations and ways of expanding classroom boundaries to include local places with wild elements. Teachers will also experience an integrated approach to place-based teaching using wilderness as the organizing concept.
One Wyoming Professional Teacher Standards Board credit is available for this workshop and graduate credit approval is pending. Wilderness Investigations is correlated with national and state standards for 5th through 8th grades and is easily adaptable for most grades.
The workshop will be conducted at the Green River Outreach for Wilderness Foundation based at Mountain Springs Ranch. Lodging is available on a donation basis at the ranch and includes a heated, carpeted bunkroom with nearby restrooms. Fee-free camping is available at nearby Scab Creek Recreation Area. Meals are not included; however, a refrigerator, freezer and microwave will be provided.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
