BLM Pinedale Installs Lander Road Interpretive Signs

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pinedale Field Office has installed four new interpretive signs for the Lander Road 21 miles south of Pinedale, Wyo., at the Lander Road historical site (mile marker 78.5) on Highway 191.

The Lander Road panels discuss the westward expansion of the U.S., the travails of emigrants along the way, and the present day context for the emigrant road.

The interpretive signs are the result of a cooperative mitigation effort for impacts to the portion of the 256-mile Lander Road, a branch of the California National Historic Trail, traversing the Pinedale Anticline natural gas field. The BLM, Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the Sublette County Historical Society, SWEPI L.P., and Ultra Resources Inc., in coordination with the Alliance for Historic Wyoming, the Oregon-California Trails Association, the Lander Trail Foundation, and the National Park Service developed, designed and funded the signs.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
