The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Buffalo Field Office will be burning a total of 25 acres of slash piles this fall in two separate areas: Billy Creek and Powder River Properties. The Billy Creek site is located 25 miles west of Buffalo off of Hazelton Road on Highway 16. There are approximately 20 acres of slash piles scheduled for burning at this site. The goal of the project is to reduce hazardous fuels by removing standing dead limber pine that was killed due to a blister rust. The Powder River Properties site includes 5 acres of slash piles. This area is located 35 miles west of Buffalo off of Hazelton Road and Upper Doyle Creek Road. These piles are the remnants of a logging contract designed to improve big game habitat by reducing encroachment of certain species into meadows. Burning is scheduled to begin November 1, 2011 and continue through April 15, 2012. All prescribed burn projects will be conducted in accordance with approved burn plans when favorable weather, smoke dispersal, and fuel conditions permit. For more information, please contact Bob Buhr at 307-684-1193 or Jen Walker at 307-684-1164. |

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
