The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office (RFO) is kicking off a 30-day scoping period by inviting the public to a meeting to identify issues and concerns to be addressed in drafting the Sand Hills/JO Ranch Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) Management Plan. The Sand Hills/JO Ranch encompasses nearly 12,700 acres, between Rawlins and Baggs and was designated as an ACEC by the Rawlins Resource Management Plan. The Sand Hills support unique vegetation, wildlife habitat, sensitive soils and recreational opportunities. The JO Ranch is important for its historical and cultural value and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The RFO is requesting the public’s input in developing the management plan which will address how each of these resources, as well as others, along with their potential uses, is administered within the Sand Hills/JO Ranch ACEC. Written substantive comments are most helpful if they cite specific actions or impacts and offer informed analysis. Scoping comments are requested by April 22 and may be submitted via email, mail or hand-delivery during regular business hours (7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). The scoping meeting will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on:

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
