BLM Rawlins Field Office Plans National Public Lands Day Activities

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office (RFO) is planning National Public Lands Day (NPLD) activities at the JO Ranch, a newly designated national historic register site, on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Volunteers are needed to help collect litter, clear brush, construct fence and erect signs. This is a wonderful way for individuals, families and civic groups to learn about their public lands and help maintain a hidden treasure for future generations. To sign up to volunteer, or for more information about the RFO NPLD event, please contact RFO Supervisory Archaeologist Bonni Bruce at 307-328-4287 or bbruce@blm.gov by Tuesday, Aug. 23.

This NPLD activity will take a full day; lunch and drinks will be provided. Volunteers are asked to wear proper work attire and safety glasses. Sunscreen and insect repellant are also highly recommended.

NPLD began in 1994 with 700 volunteers and three sites. Last year, 170,000 volunteers worked at over 2,080 sites and removed an estimated 450 tons of trash, collected an estimated 20,000 pounds of invasive plants, built and maintained an estimated 1,320 miles of trails, planted an estimated 100,000 trees, shrubs and other native plants and contributed an estimated $15 million to improve public lands across the country.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
