The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office (RFO) plans to conduct a 7,000 acre prescribed fire at Marking Pen Creek on the south-southeast portion of the Seminoe Mountains west of the North Platte River and Seminoe Dam and Reservoir. It is anticipated that optimal burn conditions will allow operations to commence as early as Monday, May 2. The treatment is intended to reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfire by eliminating existing fuel loads, creating natural fuel breaks, rejuvenating decadent aspen communities and improving upland vegetative health and diversity. The Seminoe Mountain project area is a popular recreation and hunting destination and includes antelope, elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep crucial winter ranges which will benefit from the prescribed fires. An environmental assessment, finding of no significant impact, and decision record for the Seminoe Mountain prescribed fire project area was issued by the RFO on March 29, 2011. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2012, activities on public lands generated $4.6 billion in revenue, much of which was shared with the States where the activities occurred. In addition, public lands contributed more than $112 billion to the U.S. economy and helped support more than 500,000 jobs. |
