Hunting Opening Day Caution Encouraged due to Fire

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) High Desert District Fire Management Office is encouraging hunters on this opening day to use caution near the Red Rim Grizzly Wildlife Habitat Management Area which is burning.

The blaze is between 250 to 400 acres in the Randall Butte area northwest of McCarty Canyon Road south of Rawlins. Approximately two dozen firefighters from Carbon County Fire, BLM ground and aircrews, and Riverton Fire Wranglers are responding. Assistant Fire Management Officer Richard Putnam says, “The fire situation looks really good right now. We were able to hit the fire fast and early with lots of resources so there has been no sizeable growth overnight. There are still hotspots, so people will see quite a bit of smoke.” A helicopter mapped the blaze last night and ground crews will be walking the fire line today to get a more accurate measurement. The blaze started early Thursday afternoon. The cause is under investigation.

Anyone hunting, scouting, or camping in the area is encouraged to use caution, common sense, and be aware of your surroundings. Please watch out for fire crews and equipment along the roadways. Southern Wyoming is experiencing extremely dry, unseasonably warm temperatures creating prime fire conditions.

For more information, contact Assistant Fire Management Officer Richard Putnam at (307) 352-0236.
