BLM Rawlins Seeks Public Input on New Office Wind Tower

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office is seeking public input through written comments on a proposal to install an additional wind turbine at the Rawlins Field Office to increase electrical generation and improve reliability.

The existing turbine was integral to the Field Office building attaining the “gold” status under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. Qualifications for attaining gold status include energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy.

The BLM proposes to construct an enclosed tubular tower 120 feet tall with 35 foot blades and an output of 100 kW north of the existing turbine. The existing turbine would remain in service until mechanical issues render it un-repairable, at which time it will be dismantled.

The BLM has completed the environmental assessment (EA), but is accepting additional comments on the proposed wind turbine until June 9, 2010. The EA is available online at http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/rfodocs/rfo-turbine.html.

Written comments should be sent to BLM, Rawlins Field Office, P.O. Box 2407, Rawlins, WY 82301. Comments can also be emailed to Project Manager Pamela Murdock at pam_murdock@blm.gov. Please include “Rawlins Field Office Turbine” in the subject line.

For more information, please contact Pamela Murdock, Project Manager at 307-328-4215.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
