BLM Cody Releases EA for Bentonite Mining |

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Cody Field Office announces the availability of an environmental assessment (EA) on a proposed bentonite mining project near Lovell, Wyo. Wyo-Ben, Inc. proposes to conduct new bentonite mining and concurrent reclamation on public land located 10 miles southeast of Lovell in Big Horn County. Wyo-Ben has been mining in the area since the 1970s and proposes to expand its bentonite mining operations by 543.5 acres. The EA has been prepared to analyze the impacts of the proposed project. It is available for public review and comment by visiting the BLM website at www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/cyfodocs/NorthEmblem.html. The plan of operations submitted by Wyo-Ben is available for review at the Cody Field Office, 1002 Blackburn Avenue in Cody. The public comment period runs from June 3 through July 2, 2010. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2012, activities on public lands generated $4.6 billion in revenue, much of which was shared with the States where the activities occurred. In addition, public lands contributed more than $112 billion to the U.S. economy and helped support more than 500,000 jobs. |
