Cross-Country Ski Trail Now Open for Winter Season

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Kemmerer Field Office announced today that the Viva Naughton Cross-Country Ski Trail has been groomed and is now open for public use. There is no charge to the public for use of the trail.

The 4-mile trail is located at the north end of Lake Viva Naughton and is 18 miles north of Kemmerer. The trail head is located on the east side of Lincoln County Road 233, directly across from the snowmobile trail head parking lot.

The trail is designed for beginning and intermediate cross-country skiers. It crosses a variety of topography, but is primarily flat and easy with some gentle hills. The trail is exclusively for use by cross-country skiers and provides a nice view of the area.

There is an additional trail closer to Kemmerer that has been groomed and available for cross-country skiers’ use located at the Fossil Island Golf Course in Kemmerer. These trails will be groomed once a week, or as the weather dictates.

For more information or for free maps which indicate the location of the Viva Naughton loop, contact the BLM Kemmerer Field Office at 312 Highway 189 North in Kemmerer, Wyo., 307-828-4500.

The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
