Media Advisory: Five Springs Road Closure Extended

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Cody Field Office announced today that the closure of the Five Springs Road, located 22 miles east of Lovell, Wyo., will be extended by approximately one week. Repairs are now expected to be completed by August 6.

The Five Springs Falls Campground will remain open on weekends throughout the duration of the project. The road will open each Friday at 4:00 p.m. and close each Monday at 7:00 a.m.

The Five Springs Road was closed for improvements beginning July 12. Road repairs include ditch cleaning, asphalt patching and chip sealing. The closure during repairs is necessitated by the narrowness and steepness of the Five Springs Road. A barricade will be placed at the bottom of the road.

The Five Springs Falls Campground, nestled at the base of the Bighorn Mountains along Five Springs Creek, is a popular weekend destination. The road improvements will make the campground more easily accessible for recreationists including hikers and wildlife watchers.

For updates on the closure, please contact the Cody Field Office at 307-578-5900 or the Wind River/Bighorn Basin District Office at 307-347-5100.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
