The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rock Springs Field Office (RSFO) is issuing an Environmental Assessment (EA), Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), and a Decision Record (DR) for the Luman Rim Natural Gas Development Project proposed by Yates Petroleum Corporation and Pinnacle Gas Resources, Inc. The Luman Rim project will authorize drilling 58 additional natural gas wells in north central Sweetwater County, Wyo., approximately 33 miles north of Interstate 80, within the boundary of the RSFO. The project encompasses nearly 22,000 acres of federal and state owned lands. Twenty-six natural gas wells have already been drilled in the Luman Rim, and another seven wells have been permitted. In addition to the natural gas wells, the project will also involve construction of well pads, access roads, pipelines, and related production facilities. The Luman Rim Project is in compliance with the Green River Resource Management Plan, including the objectives of the Red Desert Management Area. A 30-day public scoping period was held in May and June 2008, and all comments concerning potential impacts were addressed in the EA. The DR is subject to administrative review through the appeal process, which is outlined in the Decision Record. The EA, FONSI, and DR are available on the web at: http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/rsfodocs/luman_rim.html. For more information contact Samantha Thurston, 307-352-0237. |

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
