BLM to Host Blood Drive

The Rock Springs Office of the Bureau of Land Management is hosting a blood drive on Friday Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The blood drive is open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged.

Donors should bring a photo ID, a list of medications they are taking, and the places and times of travel outside of the country. Donors are encouraged to eat well 30-45 minutes prior to donating, and to drink plenty of water and limit caffeine intake.

There are many new benefits to sharing the gift of life, including a “Hero Rewards” program; details can be found at www.bloodhero.com. A free total cholesterol screening is completed with every successful donation.

Certain restrictions apply to those interested in participating: donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be 17 years of age or older, must not be experiencing cold or flu symptoms, must not have acquired hepatitis after the age of 11, must not have been pregnant within the past six months, or have been at risk for HIV exposure.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
