BLM Worland Releases Plan of Operations and EA for Bentonite Mining

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Worland Field Office is seeking comments on a proposed bentonite mining project in Hot Springs County.

Wyo-Ben, Inc. proposes to conduct bentonite mining and concurrent reclamation at six locations in Hot Spring County and to use existing roads to haul bentonite to their Lucerne Plant. Total disturbance over the life of the project is estimated to be approximately 200 acres. If the plan of operations is approved, Wyo-Ben, Inc. could begin mining later this year. The current plan is a revision to a proposal originally submitted in 1984, although mining operations did not occur at that time.

An environmental assessment (EA) has been prepared to analyze the impacts of the proposed project. Both the EA and the plan of operations submitted by Wyo-Ben, Inc. are now available for public review and comment by visiting the BLM website at www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/wfodocs.html. Copies are also available at the Worland Field Office, 101 S. 23rd Street in Worland.

The public comment period runs from July 29 through August 27, 2009. Comments should be addressed to AFM Minerals and Lands, BLM-Worland Field Office, P.O. Box 119, Worland, WY, 82401. Comments can also be emailed to worland_wymail@blm.gov.
