Trails Center Announces Guided Hike to Tipi Rings
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Historic Trails Interpretive Center (NHTIC) staff is conducting a guided hike of tipi rings in Shirley Basin, Wyo. on Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tipis provided shelter to Plains Indians for thousands of years. During windy conditions, stones were placed along the base of tipis. Today, these stone circles represent the exact locations of tipis and are symbols of the Plains Indians and their nomadic way of life.
The drive from Casper to the Shirley Basin trail head is 1 hour, 30 minutes.
The guided hike is approximately 2.6 miles, round trip, across easy terrain. Wear appropriate foot wear, and bring water, snacks, and sun screen.
Hikers will meet at the NHTIC at 10 a.m. and caravan in their own personal vehicles to the tipi rings at Shirley Basin.
The program is free, but space is limited. To make reservations, call Alex Rose at (307) 261-7780.
NHTIC is a public-private partnership between the BLM and National Historic Trails Center Foundation. The facility is located at 1501 N. Poplar Street, Casper, Wyo. The Center is currently operating on summer hours, and is open daily, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of Americas public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2015, the BLM generated $4.1 billion in receipts from activities occurring on public lands.
