BLM and Weston County School District Provide Summer Program for Upton Middle School Students

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Newcastle Field Office and Weston County School District 7 (Upton Middle School) are teaming up this month to provide a three-week summer program designed to increase students’ knowledge of natural resource management and gain valuable skills in using global positioning system (GPS) technologies.

The partnership will run from July 13 to July 31, 2009 and include 18 students from Upton Middle School. Activities will take place at Mallo Camp and includes two overnight campouts. Natural resource specialists from the BLM will provide insightful programs on a wide variety of topics including wildlife, recreation, cultural resources, geology, and range management.

Students will also collect GPS data, which will be used in geographic information system (GIS) analysis of the Mallo area.

Mallo Camp is located approximately 18 miles north of Newcastle. “We are excited to provide Upton Middle School students with an on-the-ground learning opportunity at one of the pristine areas in our resource area. We look forward to this partnership that encourages experiential education in the outdoors and exposes students to natural resources,” noted Newcastle Field Manager Vi Hillman.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
