The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will close the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center (NHTIC) at 5 p.m., Saturday, August 22, 2009, for the final set up of the NHTIC Foundation Celebrity Chef Cook Off annual fund-raiser. “We will be open for visitors on Saturday, August 22, but will not charge admission because of the set up and preparations of the chefs and others for the event that evening,” noted NHTIC Director Michael Abel. This is the NHTIC Foundation’s Sixth Annual Celebrity Chef Cook Off fund-raiser. It will run from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $70 in advance and $75 at the door. There will be multiple chefs offering unique foods along with entertainment, and a silent and live auction. For more information contact the NHTIC Foundation at (307) 265-8030. The NHTIC is a public-private partnership between the BLM and the National Historic Trails Center Foundation. The facility is located at 1501 N. Poplar Street, Casper, Wyo. The Center is currently operating on summer hours, and is open daily, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. |

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
