Worland BLM to Host
National Public Lands Day Event

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Worland Field Office is celebrating National Public Lands Day (NPLD) from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 25, with a workday at the Gebo/Crosby Historic Coal Mining District.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance America’s public lands. NPLD began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Today, nine federal agencies and many state and local land management agencies participate in this annual day of caring for public lands.

BLM Volunteer Coordinator Nancy Baker said that volunteers are needed to “help improve the old road beds for walking and bicycling trails, and to establish a designated parking area.” All participants will receive a NPLD T-shirt and a one-time, fee-free use certificate for any public land area that charges an entrance fee.

Participants will meet at the Gebo/Crosby Historic Coal Mining District at 8:00 a.m. Bring a water bottle and dress appropriately for rain or shine. Boots or sturdy shoes are required. Gloves, sunglasses, hats and sun block are recommended. Lunch, water and tools will be provided.

The Gebo/Crosby area was part of the original discovery of coal in Wyoming's Bighorn Basin, and was the area's largest producer of coal in the early 20th century. The Jones Mine opened in the summer of 1889 as the first commercial production in the district. Later, the Gebo Number 1 Mine produced from the same coal seam. Mining in this area largely ended in 1938 but many of the facilities are still present and provide interpretive opportunities.
