February 25, 2008 Contact: Andrea Pettay 307-775-6035   BLM Hosts Women’s History Presentation Western literature scholar Linda Ross will present “Tragedy and Triumph: Women’s Lives on the Great Plains” at the Bureau of Land Management Wyoming State Office on Tuesday, March 11 at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Ross will explore the effects moving to and living on the Great Plains had on women. Sickness, accident, death, drought, hail, wind, heat, blizzards, isolation, loneliness, distance, and the seemingly monotonous landscape all profoundly affected pioneer women. While many lived tragic lives, many more successfully defied the elements, living conditions, and isolation. Ross will delve into these women’s experiences through firsthand accounts, including journal and diary entries, personal memories, and the works of Mari Sandoz. Ross holds a master’s degree from Chadron State College and a doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has taught at Sheridan College and at the University of Wyoming Outreach School. The event is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council. The BLM State Office is located at 5353 Yellowstone Road, Cheyenne, Wyo.
