Rock Springs BLM Reaches Wild Horse Gather Goal
The Rock Springs BLM reached its goal of gathering 856 horses from the White Mountain and Little Colorado Herd Management Areas (HMAs) this month.
“We consider the gather operation a success,” said Jay D’Ewart, wild horse specialist with the Rock Springs BLM Office. “Our goal was to gather 695 horses from White Mountain and 161 from the Little Colorado HMAs. A total of 570 horses were shipped to the Canon City, Colo. BLM facility. The remaining gathered horses are currently in the Rock Springs horse corrals.
Fertility control measures were used during this gather operation. “We treated and released 43 mares from the White Mountain and 20 mares from the Little Colorado gathers,” D’Ewart added.
There are 16 Herd Management Areas (HMAs) on BLM-administered lands in Wyoming. Each of the HMA’s has a high and low Appropriate Management Level (AML). These gathers bring the White Mountain and Little Colorado HMAs within acceptable AMLs.
The horses sent to Canon City as well as those currently in the Rock Springs BLM Horse Corrals are available for adoption. Adoption information is available at www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/programs/Wild_Horses.html and Internet Adoption information can be found at www.blm.gov/adoptahorse/, or visit the local BLM Office.
