Kemmerer BLM Issues EA for
Bear Canyon Developmental Exploratory Project
The Kemmerer Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued on July 3, 2007, its Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Bear Canyon Developmental Exploratory project.
Fortuna U.S. L.P. filed a Notice of Staking (NOS) with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Kemmerer Field Office in the fall of 2006, for a wildcat exploratory field on public lands within Lincoln County, Wyoming. The project area is located throughout multiple Sections within Township 23 North, Ranges 117 and 118 West, 6th Principal Meridian. The Kemmerer BLM issued a 30-day public scoping notice in December 2006 which concluded Jan. 3, 2007.
Approximately 2 dozen comments were received that mainly focused on cultural and archeological issues, primarily in the western half of the proposed project area. The Decision Record could be signed by the end of this summer. Project implementation could follow within 30 days of the release of the Decision Record. Project implementation could be affected by any existing wildlife habitat concerns or stipulations.
The EA represents the culmination of a comprehensive planning process involving the public and numerous cooperators at the federal, state and local level to analyze options for a balance of uses in the planning area. The process was undertaken in full compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and other applicable legal requirements.
The EA analyzed the impacts associated with the initial drilling, testing, and completion of the exploratory test well. Upon determination of resources found in the test well, a separate EA may be completed for future development.
