Wild Horse Gather Planned for November

The Wyoming Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Rock Springs Field Office is proposing to gather and remove approximately 612 excess wild horses from the White Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) and approximately 113 excess wild horses from the Little Colorado HMA.

Population inventory data collected in March 2007 indicated that these wild horse populations exceeded the established Appropriate Management Level (AML) for each HMA. The AML range for the White Mountain HMA is 205-300 horses and 69-100 wild horses for the Little Colorado HMA.

This population management action is scheduled to start on or near Nov.1, 2007 and proposes to implement the use of fertility control vaccine on the HMAs’ remaining mares.

The wild horse management objectives are to protect, maintain and control viable, healthy herds of wild horses, while retaining their free-roaming nature. It is also designed to provide adequate habitat for free-roaming wild horses through management consistent with principles of multiple use and environmental protection and to provide the opportunity for the public to view wild horses.

The AMLs for the Rock Springs Field Office’s HMAs were recommended through an agreement with private land owners and wild horse advocacy groups and established or confirmed through the Green River Resource Management Plan planning process.

The scoping notice for this proposed management action can be viewed at: http://www.blm.gov/wy/en/info/NEPA/rsfodocs/whitemtn_littlecolo.html. Paper copies of this document are available in the Rock Springs Field Office. The BLM will accept comments on the proposed horse gather through July 18, 2007. Please submit your comments to:
