Powder River Fire

A lightning caused fire has burned 650 acres of combined BLM and private land in extreme southeast Washakie County, 45 miles south of Tensleep. The fire, named Powder River, was reported at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, and quickly grew to its present size due to extremely dry fuels of grass, sage brush and timber. 15 structures are threatened and the BLM Middle Fork Powder River campground is closed until further notice. Firefighting efforts are being impeded by hot, dry, windy conditions. Resources dedicated to the fire consist of 1 helicopter, 7 engines, and 2 hand crews (20 persons each). Currently, fire managers are projecting containment by Friday at 9 p.m.
