Volunteers needed for Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Buffalo Field Office (BFO) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are seeking volunteers to assist with the 2006 Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey on January 14, 2006.

This survey is part of a national effort which began in 1979 to establish an index of the total winter bald eagle population in the lower 48 states. Participants are asked to count eagles along standard routes to identify population trends.

Public meetings will be held to discuss survey methodology and eagle identification. Survey routes will also be assigned. Routes will be distributed across the Powder River Basin and will be along public roads such as the Upper Powder River Road.

Meetings will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the following locations:

  • Buffalo Jan. 11, 2005 BLM Buffalo Field Office, 1425 Fort Street
  • Gillette Jan. 12, 2005 Campbell County Library, 2101 S. 4J Road
  • Sheridan Jan. 12, 2005 Sheridan County YMCA, 417 N. Jefferson

To volunteer, or for additional information, contact Tom Bills at 307-684-1133 or Brad Rogers at 307-684-1046. For more information on the national program visit the U.S. Geological Survey Snake River Field Station web site at http://srfs.wr.usgs.gov/research/indivproj.asp?SRFSProj_ID=2.
