Western Wyoming has long been a favored location for hunting. From the 1800’s and into modern times hunters have pursued and depended upon local animal species as a means of survival, commercial interest, or sport. A variety of animal species inhabit the high desert and alpine environment, depending upon this rugged and often harsh land for survival. Western Wyoming is renowned for its healthy and abundant animal population including mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat, as well as game bird species like blue, spotted, and ruffed grouse.  

Hunting Requirements

A Wyoming state hunting license is required to hunt in Wyoming. This includes hunting on BLM administered lands, as well as National Forest and State of Wyoming public lands.

Special Recreation Permits

Commercial use of BLM lands is not authorized without the possession of a Special Recreation Permit. Further information about SRPs and applications can be requested through the Pinedale BLM Field Office, 1625 West Pine St. Pinedale, WY 82941, 307-367-5300.

Be Responsible

Human and wildlife residents depend upon proper and prudent management to protect Wyoming’s game species and habitat. Please do what you can to keep Wyoming’s open spaces and its animals healthy by practicing Leave No Trace and minimum impact camping and travel practices. Adhere to the Tread Lightly principles when you go out on foot, bicycle or motor vehicle. Proper food storage and human waste disposal techniques will go a long way to sustain animal and human populations.
