Sheep Mountain Land Exchange

Sheep Mountain area proposed for acquisition.

BLM has proposed a land exchange where 1,828.45 acres of private land would be acquired from The Nature Conservancy and a new interested private land owner. The property is located on Sheep Mountain approximately 12 miles southwest of Cody, Wyoming. The primary public benefits of the exchange would be 1) protection/enhancement of important big game, grizzly bear and rare plant habitat, and 2) maintenance/acquisition of public access and potential for recreation opportunities.

The public land BLM proposes to trade out of federal ownership in order to acquire the private land would be of equal value - though not necessarily equal acreage - and would likely come from a pool of land located in the rolling foothills of Sheep and Table Mountains known as the Stonebridge area. The only public access to the Stonebridge area is by foot or by horseback from the south over very rough, mountainous terrain and recreational opportunities are very limited.

A Notice of Exchange Proposal giving the details is expected to be available in the near future.

Beck Lake Withdrawal

A land withdrawal has been proposed for the area in and around Beck Lake south of Cody. The withdrawal would protect important scenic, open space, and recreational resource values.
